Dave is a Graduate of the Penn State University Turf Grass Management Program. Downing spent 11 years as the Golf Course Superintendent at four courses (notably the TPC of Connecticut and the Las Vegas Country Club). From 1990 to 1998 Downing acted as Director of Golf Course Operations for Wild Wing Plantation where he was involved with golf course development, construction, grow-in and start up of the 72-hole facility. From 1998 – 2002 Downing acted as Director of Golf Course Operations for Barefoot Resort & Golf. Downing led construction of the four world renowned courses (Love, Dye, Fazio & Norman) and became the first 72-hole facility to open all four courses the same day. During Downing’s four years at Barefoot Resort;’ he oversaw Tournament Operations of six Canadian Tour events televised on the Golf Channel. Downing owned and operated his own consulting business from 1994 – 2003, consulted part-time on golf course management of 13 facilities in four states. Downing spent 18 months as Senior VP of Golf Operations with a management company in Pinehurst, NC then another 18 months as Director of Golf Operations at the Pearl Resort and Golf. Prior to his promotion with Signature Golf, Downing worked as the Golf Course Superintendent of Rivers Edge Golf Club an Arnold Palmer Signature Course ranked #62 in “Best 100 Public Golf Courses in America” by Golf Digest.
Downing has earned many honors and awards including: 1993 “Best of the South” Award for “Course Conditioning and Presentation” for the Wood Stork Course at Wild Wing, 1995 GCSAA Environmental Steward – Merit Award and the 1997 Bayer Carolina’s CPC Award. Dave has been involved in the golf industry throughout his career. He currently serves the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America as the Vice President. Last year he served at the Secretary/Treasurer and for the 4 years prior was a director of this organization. He is the past president of the Carolinas Chapter of the GCSAA, a member of the USGA Greens Section Committee, and a director on the Environmental Institute for Golf. He has served Horry Georgetown Technical College as a member of their advisory council as well as two Dacum committees. He resides in Myrtle Beach with his wife Jo.
